Meet the Apprentices: Ben Thomas

3 March 2025

What is your current role in Welsh Water?

I’m a Trainee Network Technician.

What were your main interests in school? Did you have any career plans? Had you considered an apprenticeship?

I really enjoyed Maths, Engineering and Sports in school. Originally, I wanted to go into business and finance, then changed to barbering. I’d never considered an apprenticeship as I was always under the impression that taking an apprenticeship would mean a big pay cut.

How did you find out about the Welsh Water apprentice scheme? What made you want to apply?

I found out about the apprenticeship through my friend who started a year prior to me, where we have the same interests and knew I’d enjoy the job.

How did you find the application and onboarding process? How did you feel when you learned you were accepted as an apprentice?

The application and onboarding process was smooth, almost like a seamless transition. I was over the moon when I was told I got the job, and I really felt grateful for finding out the same day to put my mind at ease.

Tell us about your Welsh Water journey. What’s been your highlight so far?

I’ve been with the company for 4 months now and I fit into my team like a glove. It’s been very enjoyable so far, with constant learning and improvement. As a highlight I’d have to say our team Christmas meal with secret Santa.

How have you found the support for developing your career?

As for development, I have been put onto a HNC course as soon as I started, which I feel invested in by the company, putting me through this to gain relevant knowledge for going towards the next step in my career.

Do you have any plans for where you’d like your career to go?

Right now, I’d just like to complete my apprenticeship and learn the role I am in thoroughly. However, being an ambitious person, I’d like to just keep progressing and climbing the ladder.
