Time to Talk Money: how Welsh Water can help you make savings and manage your money

12 November 2021

This Talk Money Week, we’re here to tell you about why talking about money matters and to share some information that could help you manage your money.

Money. Five little letters. Big word. Here at Welsh Water we’re well aware that many of our customers might be facing some financial challenges right now. And talking openly about money can have a huge impact towards tackling money worries and contributes to our overall health.

The impact of Covid-19 has made it more important than ever to look after our financial wellbeing and start conversations about money. Whether it’s experiencing furlough, seen changes to Universal Credit payments, or worrying about rising energy costs as the weather turns colder, the financial impacts of the events of the last 18 months have been far reaching. In fact, the Financial Conduct Authority published figures earlier this year suggesting that as many as 1 in 4 adults in the UK were struggling with low financial resilience because of the pandemic.

So, how can we help? It all starts with a conversation. We’ve already ramped up our support for customers in response to the pandemic, and we’re currently providing financial assistance to more than 147,000 customers who need help to pay their bills. We provide a range of options for those in need of support, including:

  • Debt schemes designed to support customers to clear debts and get in control of their payments
  • Tariffs to cap water bills for low-income households or people receiving a means-tested benefit
  • Water efficiency advice to help customers on a water meter make savings with simple changes to habits at home

The last thing we want people to do is stay silent about any financial challenges they might be facing. Individual circumstances change all the time, and we know the last 18 months have been especially challenging for lots of our customers.

We have teams of expert, friendly advisors whose job it is to help find solutions for customers facing financial hardship. It’s important to us that all our customers know that we’re here to offer our support – if you have any worries about your water bill, we want to talk to you and we want to help.

No matter your circumstances, we can work with you to find a solution. And every solution begins with a conversation. That’s why we’re encouraging anyone who is worried about being able to afford their water bill to reach out and talk to us.

We do understand that some of our customers might not be ready to speak with us on the phone – after all, talking about money can be difficult. While we’d love you to reach out and speak to our helpful advisors for support, if you’d prefer to go online you can find all the information and forms you need about our financial support options at help with bills
