WRAS

The Water Regulation Advisory Scheme (WRAS) is the UK’s central body that facilitates compliance with the water supply (water fittings) regulations, and all the UK’s water suppliers subscribe to it.

WRAS explain that ‘The purpose of WRAS is to contribute to the protection of public health by preventing contamination of public water supplies and encouraging the efficient use of water by promoting and facilitating compliance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Scottish Byelaws.’

In practical terms this means that WRAS supports UK water suppliers to provide a consistent national approach of interpreting the regulations, support approval schemes so that individuals and companies can demonstrate compliance with the regulations, and represent UK water companies in a centralised development of guidance, code of practice, and standards.

WRAS provides a wealth of information, contacts and publications through its website at https://www.wras.co.uk/. This also includes a current list of approved manufacturers products and materials, and installation methods, for use in plumbing systems and installations, which is a useful guide for plumbers and installers.

WRAS can also provide guidance to enquiries regarding the interpretation of the regulations, and provide information on how disputes could be resolved between customers and relevant parties involved in plumbing systems. This includes for a small cost, a comprehensive water regulation guide which includes the water fittings regulations and the regulators guidance clauses as well as water supply industry recommendations and over 100 colour illustrations can be obtained from WRAS.

One of WRAS’ recent policy additions is available here, and this outlines the latest expectation of UK water companies in how they should operate when enforcing the regulations, and also how they will be measured or compared against each other in the future.

WRAS’ address is:
Unit 13, Willow Road,
Pen-y-fan Industrial Estate, Crumlin,
Gwent, NP11 4EG,
Telephone: 01495 248 454

As part of compliance with WRAS’ latest policy, all water companies are to produce a customer enforcement policy outlining how the regulations will be enforced, shown here (attach our customer enforcement policy).
