Due to the severe weather conditions we are experiencing a high level of calls from customers with frozen pipes. Customers are advising us that they have no water or frozen pipes. Unfortunately, we are unable to assist if it is your service pipe that is frozen i.e. the pipe that carries water into the first incoming tap at your property. This can be the cold tap in the kitchen or a utility room or downstairs bathroom cold tap. Frozen pipes can cause problems for properties during the winter months and if you are experiencing problems due to frozen pipework you can try thawing your service pipe.
Do not pour hot water on to external stop taps, and do not operate your external stop tap as this could be dangerous (they are usually situated next to highways).
Locate your internal stop tap (usually under the sink, downstairs toilet, understairs etc). You will need to contact your local plumber if you are unable to locate your stop tap.
You can use a hot water bottle or hairdryer to try to thaw the pipe starting from the end nearest the first incoming tap, ensure you apply the heat in short bursts and please note you should not use a naked flame near the pipes (do not use a blow torch or heat gun).
Try pouring warm water on your bib tap (garden tap) to try and thaw this way.
For further advice on how to avoid getting frozen pipes please see our fact sheet ‘Don’t crack up wrap up’.
